Pörtom hembygdsförening är inte särskilt stor men en aktiv förening. Den bildades år 1951 i samband med att fornforskningsarbetet med utgrävningar då hade kommit i gång i Pörtom. Föreningen räknar idag ca. 200 medlemmar.

År 1961 fick föreningen ett hembygdsmuseum. Det var inrymt i prästgårdens drängstuga. Åren 1985 och 1986 flyttades museiföremålen till en ny plats nämligen Dahlbacken. Platsen ligger vid riksvägen ca. 3,5 km norrom Pörtom kyrka. Småttgården är det första hus som föreningen uppförde på den nya museiplatsen, det så kallade Dalboska området. På platsen finns nu 11 hus, Viktor Dalbos byggnader och Ahlholma gård medräknade. Det blir allt fler.

Pörtom hembygdsförenings verksamhet är först nämnt huvudsakligen inriktad på tre områden: fornminnesvård, dokumentationsverksamhet och uppbyggnaden av museet.

Vi som arbetar aktivt i föreningen har förmånen att verka i en bygd, som är till brädden fylld med förhistoriska minnen. Jag vill i denna korta presentation endast nämna att i Pörtom finns över 2300 registrerade fornlämningar. Och här har vi hittills påträffat 29 boplatser från förhistorisk tid.

I dokumentationsarbetet ingår bland annat handlingar, kartor, böcker och föremål. På väggen i vårt arkivrum finns en karta. Kartan skall fungera som ett forum för museets angelägenheter. I elva rubriker presenteras på denna karta olika typer av källor till hembygdens historia. Källmaterialet, som är numrerat, omfattar 50 nummer. I arkivet finns samma numrering som på kartan. Detta är ett utmärkt sökmedel vid studier.

Det är mycket stämningsfullt på museiplatsen vid Dahlbacken och uppbyggnaden av själva museet fortgår hela tiden. Småttgården, en manbyggnad från Smått i slutet av 1700-talet till exempel speglar miljön i ett gammalt allmogehem. Redan i brokvisten och farstun möter vi en ålderdomlig omgivning. Storstugan är inredd som en gammal bondstuga. Här finns farstukammaren, framstugan, innerkammaren och vindsvåningen. Denna är i första hand utställningsplats med föremål i tusental. Alla museets föremål är uppsatta gruppvis, nu i 44 grupper.

Innerkammaren är inredd som arkiv, utställnings- och forskningsrum. Ett särskilt föremålskartotek har lagts upp. I arkivets olika utrymmen finns nu 4675 föremål från bygden registrerade. Bildsamlingen är på 6845 bilder.

The local history associations of Pörtom is not prominent but rather quite active. The local historical association was created in 1951 simultaneously as the archaeological research and fieldwork were getting started in Pörtom. Currently, the number of members in the associations is getting close to 200.

In 1961 the local history association got a museum. The museum was housed in the vicars' farm workers' cottage. In 1985 and 1986, the museum and all artefacts were moved from the vicars' farmworkers' cottage to a new museum location, namely Dahlbacken. Dahlback lies next to E8 (European road 8), some 3,5 km north of the church of Pörtom. Småttgården was the first house to be moved and placed at Dahlbacken. Currently, there are 11 houses at Dahlbacken, counting Viktor Dalbos houses and the Ahlholma farm-estate. And the number of houses at the museum are only increasing.

The work of the local history association of Pörtom has three main objectives: collection and the keeping of historical artefacts, to work on and preserve historical documents and the further construction and expansion of the museum.

Those who actively work in the association may enjoy the pleasure of working within an area filled with prehistorical artefacts, sites and memories. I do want to, in this short presentation, say that there are well over 2300 registered archaeological sites. And so far, 29 prehistoric settlements have been found in Pörtom.

The documentation work is made up by documenting historical contracts, maps, books and artefacts. At the wall of our archive, there is a map. This map is thought to be a forum for the dealings of the museum. With eleven headlines, this map presents different types of sources for the history of Pörtom. Currently, the collected historical research about Pörtom is consolidated in a 50 parts volume. These volumes are an excellent start for anyone who wants to research the history of Pörtom.

The museum at Dahlbacken is quite atmospheric, and the buildup of the museum proper continues. Småttgården, a commoner's house from the family of Smått and the end of the 18^th century, recollects and shows the environment of the commoner in Pörtom from the late 18^th century. Already in the hallway, we are greeted with an old environment. The big room, or the house proper, is furnished according to an old farmhouse from the 19^th century. The house has the following rooms: vestibule chamber, the vestibule, the inner chamber and the attic. These rooms are primarily exhibits, and the number of objects and artefacts exhibited are numbering the thousands. All of the artefacts in the museum are displayed per group, and currently, there are 44 groups in total.

The inner chamber is furnished as an archive, exhibit and researchers room. An object directory has been made, and there are currently 4675 objects and artefacts in the directory. And currently, there are also 6845 photographs in the directory. All of these objects and photographs are local and originates from Pörtom.
